It’s not long now until Valentine’s Day is upon us again.
I may be in the minority, but I look forward to it. My husband and I don’t usually exchange gifts, but we make each other cards, make some cocktails, and cook a special supper together, bribing the kids with video games and pizza so we get some time to ourselves.
I know a lot of people think Valentine’s Day is a bit of a waste of time, and I agree we should make a fuss of people we love and let them know how we feel about them all the time, not just for one day a year. Things are especially strange this year without restaurants and pubs being open, so it would be very easy to just let this Valentine’s Day pass by uncelebrated, but I have a different suggestion:
With everything everyone is going through at the moment, why don’t we all try a little bit of self-love this Valentine’s Day? When was the last time you treated yourself? This especially applies to anyone currently trying to work and homeschool simultaneously! Be kind to yourself, like you would be to a loved one who’s struggling. Give yourself grace and allow yourself to rest if you need to, and to take some time just for you to do what you love or to pamper yourself by doing something you haven’t had a chance to do for a while, like painting your nails or colouring your hair.
When I’m in need of a little pick me up, some of my favourite things to do are trying out a new recipe, taking my dogs for a long walk, watching movies, and playing board games with my family (which is made even better when I win).
Of course, my absolute favourite way to relax is with a good book. Why not treat yourself to a new read and settle down on the sofa or in a hot, bubble bath? At the moment I’m tending to focus on books which make me feel good, there’s enough sadness in the world and a little escapism definitely helps.
My novels are sure to put a smile on your face with lovable characters and Happy Ever Afters guaranteed! They can be found in many local libraries if they’re doing pickups, or they’re all available on Amazon:
So however you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day this year, and whoever you’re spending it with, make sure you do a little something to show yourself how worthwhile you are. Let’s face it, you deserve it! x
